LANSING, Mich. — When a tree landed on the Smith family property, it happened after the weekend storms and now it’s going to cost them more than $1,500.
Mike Smith says it was a pretty big tree before the tree removal service started hacking pieces away.
He’s a calm guy, an Iraq veteran who lives on a small farm in peaceful Pleasant Lake with his wife and kids.
“Not too much bothers me up,” said Smith.
Smith says they thought they weathered the Saturday storms damage-free. But woke up Sunday to a surprise.
“It was a sunny day so I think it got, we had the storms come through on Saturday so I think it weakened it,” said Smith.
The tree came tumbling down on top of his garage. Leaving he and his family unable to get inside and wondering what to do.
“Well, what was I gonna do to get this tree of the garage,” said Smith.
His wife asked for help from the community and they chose Martin Tree Service.
“We did one [tree removal] yesterday morning and then we got the call to come look at this,” owner Steve Martin said.
News 10 was there to see the tree removal process and asked Martin how bad it was on a scale of one to ten.
“Uhh, about a four,” said Martin.
The damage wasn’t much, but the cost for tree removals, Martin says start at $1,500 and go up.
“Just trying to get the work done and minimize any heartache that we got,” said Smith.
More than anything, Smith said he’s just happy it wasn’t worse.
“It’s just a garage so, nobody was hurt,” said Smith.
The family says the next step is working with the insurance company to fix this garage.
