Town Hall meeting takes on controversial immigration policy

Posted

People in Lansing's immigrant community gathered Thursday to talk about a controversial practice going on at the southern U.S. border.

Dozens of activists gathered at the Cristo Rey Church to talk about the Trump Administration's Zero Tolerance policy. It allows border agents to separate children from their parents after trying to cross the border illegally.

Organizers of the town hall event say the practice is "inhumane." Oscar Castaneda said, "I personally know people who have been affected, we have to say that it is a smaller number at this point, but it's just going to be growing. We have to deal with this right now."

Activists are working to clear up any misinformation about the policy, and urging people to ask their lawmakers for comprehensive immigration reform.
