Members of the Jackson community will have the chance to voice their concerns for legalizing recreational marijuana at a town meeting Thursday night.
The event is hosted by Drug Free Jackson, a substance abuse prevention coalition.
The event is set to feature speakers from the following organizations:
-Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
-Michigan Prosecuting Attorneys Association
-Michigan Chamber of Commerce
-Michigan Prevention Association
-Healthy and Productive Michigan
Organizers say the goal of this meeting is to educate residents about the potential consequences of legalizing marijuana for for recreational use.
The event is scheduled to take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m at the Michigan Theatre on N. Mechanic Street in Jackson.
The event comes as the Jackson County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution that opposes the legalization of recreational marijuana.
The commissioners vote came a few weeks after a coalition of police departments and county prosecutors across Michigan came out against the ballot initiative.
Those in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana say regulating marijuana like alcohol will support responsible use of the drug.
Michigan voters will ultimately decide the ballot initiative's fate on November 6th.
