Today is Autism Awareness Day in East Lansing

Posted

East Lansing Mayor Mark Meadows has adopted a resolution recognizing April 2, 2016 as Autism Awareness Day in the City of East Lansing.

Autism is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills.

There are more than 3.5 million people living with the effects of the autism spectrum disorder in the United States alone.

It is a lifelong condition, requiring early intervention, specialized education and ongoing support and treatment.

"Millions of Americans - including individuals in East Lansing - are struggling with the unique challenges of this disorder on a day-to-day basis," said Mayor Meadows.

"East Lansing residents are encouraged to join me in supporting these individuals and their families by wearing blue this Saturday, April 2 during World Autism Awareness Day."
