POTTERVILLE, Mich. — The future of the Potterville Fire Department is being discussed on Tuesday in council chambers.
Members will decide if they want to keep their department or turn operations over to Benton Township.
Benton Township submitted a $120,000 proposal with an annual three percent increase to take over Potterville's Fire Department, and it's possible that council may to accept or deny the terms at the meeting.
For the past three months Benton Township has been responding to Potterville Fire emergencies after the city's two engines failed inspection.
Potterville council members are discussing the options to purchase a new engine and keep operations in-house.
Council member Katherine Schmidt says although she appreciates Benton Township as a mutual partner, she is supporting an independent fire department.
"My intent would be to go into this meeting and say... I can not accept this bid proposal," Schmidt said. "The price is far too high and we need to authorize our chiefs to go out, find a truck and by a truck. That would be my intent going into this meeting."
The council is currently in session discussing the issue.
