LANSING, Mich. — Tensions ran high at the Lansing Board of Police Commissioners meeting Tuesday evening as some members of the community called on the Lansing Police Department to fire two if its officers.
This all stems from a video that showed the controversial arrest of a 16-year-old girl.
Members of the community had an opportunity to address the commissioners Tuesday evening with their concerns about how the situation was handled; many of them sending a call to action to bring about change in the Lansing Police Department.
People from the community had the attention of the board of police commissioners as well as the Lansing Police Chief.
Residents called for the department to terminate the arresting officers shown in the controversial video for what they called an, "assault and abuse of power."
Lansing Police Chief Mike Yankowski told FOX 47 News that their concerns did not fall on deaf ears. The chief said the incident is being investigated by internal affairs and he said he will not make any premature judgments on the case.
"Until the investigation is done, it's fair that everyone has due process rights and police officers are no different. It's that we have to take A complete evaluation based on all the evidence of the incident," Yankowski said.
The two officers arresting officers are currently on administrative leave and the investigation could take up to three months.
The Police Board of Commissioners will review the final report of the investigation. If they believe it was not thoroughly investigated, they are able to appeal the findings.
