Temperature drops have businesses paying attention to crops

Recent overnight freezing temperatures could affect Michigan's fruit crop. While a majority of Michigan fruit farmers have avoided major weather-related crop losses due to late season frost, some businesses were affected over the weekend.

Carolann works at Sandhill Crane Vineyards in Jackson.

When she went outside this morning to check the vines, the frost already made it's mark on the leaves.

"I was really hoping we wouldn't dip down as cold as it has gotten. Just because I knew our variety, our early blossoming variety, was probably going to get hit pretty hard,"she said.

Carloann is one of many keeping a close eye on crops. Kevin Robson with the Michigan Farm Bureau said they've been getting a lot of phone calls on crop conditions.

"A lot of our members have contacted us to give us an update on where they're at with their orchard at the orchard level. It's still too early to tell,"Kevin Robson said.

Kevin says a lot of farmers have already taken precautions by using frost fans and cover sprays to save their fruit from the winds tonight.
