A Jackson County teenager who admitted he tried to kill his grandmother was sentenced to 3 - 20 years in prison on Wednesday in Judge John McBain's courtroom.

18-year-old Bret Goodnuff pleaded guilty to one count of assault with intent to murder.

Goodnuff admitted to attacking his grandmother with a baseball bat in October 2017 at their Rives Township home during an argument over a cell phone.

The Sheriff's office says Goodnuff, who was 17 at the time, attacked his 58-year-old grandmother with a baseball bat on October 4, 2017. She suffered injuries to her arms, head, and back.

Goodnuff was later arrested after police found him riding his bike on I-94 in Calhoun County.

Assault with intent to murder is punishable by up to life in prison. Goodnuff was handed down a sentence of 36-240 months, with a credit of 378 days of time already served.
