EAST LANSING, Mich. (WSYM)- With the cost of college going through the roof, scholarships are becoming crucial to pay for higher education.

One local program is making the dream of going to college come true for a Mid-Michigan high school student.

Xzavier Odom is a student at East Lansing High School who values his education.

"Education has always been number one in my household," Odom said. " My parents have always instilled that in me".

Xzavier says he is thinking ahead because his future is important.

"I have applied and filled out applications for countless scholarships to help me get through school," he explained.

He is one of the recipients of a $5,000 scholarship from the Great Lansing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission.

"I just had to write an essay about Martin Luther King's idea of togetherness and how I can use it into today's society," he added.

Elaine Hardy, Chairperson of the MLK, Jr. Commission , says part of what we do is to continue to remind today's youth and the generation after of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Xzavier will receive the award at the Greater Lansing Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission's 32nd Annual Luncheon.

The event will be held at 11.am. Jan.16 at the Lansing Center at 333 Michigan Ave.

The goal of the commission is to bring youth of all ethnic, racial, economic, and religious backgrounds together and teach them about Dr. King's vision of peace and equality.
