EAST LANSING, Mich. (WSYM) - Texas A&M Corpus Christi's women's volleyball team took off before Hurricane Harvey hit and have been on the road ever since.
The team is in East Lansing this weekend preparing for a match against Michigan State, but the players are anxious to get home.
"This can't be real this couldn't have happened," said Senior Brittany Gilpin, talking about the pictures of damage shes seen from her hometown Houston.
Gilpin says her family's home was spared, but for many of her friends it's a different story.
"Their houses have been underwater a lot of them have been evacuating with the boats and everything like that, so that's been really hard to see," she explained.
Her University was left with minor damage, despite Harvey making landfall near the Corpus Christi as a Category Four hurricane.
Head Coach Steve Greene evacuated the team just before the storm hit and they've been stuck hotel hoping since.
"This is something we really don't know how to handle honestly," Greene explained. "I was lucky that my wife and 2 kids and dog came with us."
Greene is now left trying to lead his team, while his family heads home to cleanup.
"I think they're just taking it day by day as best they can. As the head coach I'm supposed to keep it together and keep a straight face. I tend to handle things with humor as best I can but my jokes aren't really funny right now so trying to just keep it together and be there for the team as best as possible."
The girls are finding strength on the court, with one last practice before their game at MSU Saturday.
"It's heartbreaking I mean looking at Rockport and some of the places that we go often," said Kristyn Nicholson a senior who's also from Texas. "All we could do is focus on the now. We were all together as a team we were all safe."
A bond they'll need as they head home after the game to begin the difficult recovery.
"It's kind of hard to help on the road," Gilpin said. "All I can do is reach out and say 'I hope your family is okay, I'm praying for you.'"
