State lawmakers are expected to consider legislation this Spring that would allow trained teachers to carry a gun at school.
In Jackson County, a gun training service provided an outlet for teachers to train and arm themselves.
Modern Gunslinger hosted a free Concealed Pistol License education and training course in Grass Lake this past Saturday. A dozen teachers and bus drivers from across the state attended.
Alex Perreault, an instructor of the course, said the spotlight on recent school shootings has put educators on edge.
Dawn Rahn has taught the first grade in Macomb County for the past 6 years. Like many others, she wanted to get her CPL for personal safety, and for the safety for her family. But if a bill passes, her firearm would also be used for the safety of her students.
"I spend more time with them than their parents do during the day and I'm there to hug and cuddle and do all of that. The next step is to protect them," Rahn said.
