Tall grass becoming an issue for drivers

There's some tall grass off the I-496 ramp onto Waverly road and it's making it difficult for drivers to see.

Hunching over and leaving forward. That's how drivers who take exit 3 to Waverly Road from the highway try to stay safe.

"it's just so tall and I'm in such a short vehicle that there's just no way that I can see over the grass. And I just don't feel safe a lot of the time," said Ethan Smith.

Because of the tall grass, he says it's become difficult for him to see before moving forward.

"Every time I get to this exit right here I pull up bout as far as I'm willing to and then I lean forward to see where cars are going," Smith said.

Smith tells Fox 47 News that the only way he can see clearly is by driving past the stop sign.

"I have to drive so close and I can't see when cars are coming from either directors," Smith said. "I don't want to pull out in front of somebody that I didn't see."

The grass has to be 12 inches before the Department of Transportation can even consider mowing it, but because of funding many of their maintenance project becomes low priority.

"We have with budget constraints lately in the state we have been restricted to generally one mowing a year," said M-DOT's media liaison, Kari Arend.

She says during the summer travel season drivers should expect to see crews out.

"We've just had our kick off to summer with the Memorial Day holiday so our next major holiday will be the Fourth of July when a lot of people travel," Arend said. "It's kind of the midway point through summer so we want to get the grass cut by then cause we know it will be a busy travel period."

Drivers like Ethan Smith hopes they do something fast before some gets hurt.

"I feel like it's gonna cause some accident's eventually cause people are going to try and pull up too far."
