LANSING, Mich. — Dozens of schools are starting the academic year on Wednesday, Aug. 21 without knowing how much money they'll get from the state.
The Michigan Legislature has not reached a budget deal.
Michigan law requires school budgets to be done by July 1.
Earlier this year, Governor Gretchen Whitmer proposed spending $15.4 billion for the state’s K-12 schools and $507 million in additional spending for schools with urgent needs.
But the governor's plan relies on the passing of her 45-cent gas tax hike to help pay to repair Michigan's roads.
Republicans are not sold on that plan and say the funding needs to come from another source. The GOP is working on their own plan.
State law requires a state budget to be on the books by October.
Senators discussed roads and the budget in private on Tuesday.
House lawmakers will return to session next week.
