Students could choose gender, bathroom

Michigan students should be allowed to choose their gender, name, pronouns and bathroom under guidance drafted by the State Board of Education.

The guidance is still in draft phases, but is part of an effort to make schools more inclusive and safe for all students.

According to the guidance, "students should be treated equally and fairly, free from discrimination, harassment, and bullying based on their real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression."

It also includes recommendations for programs and other policies to support LGBTQ students.
