The East Lansing School District is waiting to hear back from the health department after finding out a senior who graduated Sunday has been diagnosed with whooping cough.
Her parents notified the district after she was diagnosed Monday. The high school principal then sent an alert to parents telling anyone with symptoms to seek medical attention.
East Lansing superintendent Dori Leyko told us she cannot speak to the possibility that the girl was contagious at the commencement ceremony. She says the district will not take action until hearing from the health department.
Whooping cough is a bacterial infection that causes coughing fits so intense they can break ribs. The disease can be deadly to infants. Most children are vaccinated against it.
