LANSING, Mich. — Heading out in 90 degree weather is a plight you need to be prepared for.

“You want to wear something that's loose, that breathes, that's lightweight,” said Dr. Melody Angel from Lansing Urgent Care.

Dr. Angel told Fox 47's Cryss Walker part of your preparation can start in your closet.

Avoid dark and heavy clothes or anything that is too tight and restricts movement.

“Just anything that can really help you be able to breathe because how we cool down is to be able to sweat”, Dr. Angel explained.

“The way the sweat actually helps us is when it's able to evaporate so it's the evaporation that actually alters the temperature in our bodies.”

When it comes to heat stroke prevention you can start now.

Two liters of hydrating fluids a day ahead of the heat, can help you get your body ready for the intense conditions.

“So if you can get pre-hydrated, that is a big benefit because if you're already almost totally dehydrated which a lot of us are because we drink caffeine which makes us urinate back out the hydration that we do drink”, Dr. Angel said.

Stay away from caffeinated and alcohol beverages in the heat.

“So we're talking about water, lemonade, Gatorade, soda that doesn't have caffeine in it,” Dr. Angel continued.

“Herbal tea that never had caffeine in it. Chicken or beef broth, all those, you know slurpees, popsicles, all those kinds of things are hydrating.”
