State troopers checking for seat belts, speeding, drunken driving this week

While you're traveling this Thanksgiving, you're likely to see more state troopers patrolling the roads.

The Michigan State Police troopers will be on patrol starting Wednesday until Sunday to keep drivers safe during the heavy travel time.

The troopers are taking part in Operation C.A.R.E. -- Crash Awareness and Reduction Efforts, according to a press release.

"We want everyone to make it to their Thanksgiving destination safely," said Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP.

Etue advises drivers to "buckle up, put your phone down and always designate a sober driver, and if you see emergency vehicles or other workers on the side of the road, please slow down and give a lane."

Troopers will be focusing on impaired driving, seat-belt use, careless driving and speeding in their high-visibility enforcement, according to the release.

Thanksgiving is one of the deadliest holidays on the road in the state, with 11 fatalities happening around the holiday in 2017, according to the release. Of those 11, two were pedestrians, three were passengers and six involved alcohol.
