Sen. Virgil Smith submits resignation to Senate

State Sen. Virgil Smith has submitted his resignation to the state Senate, 7 Action News has learned. His resignation will be effective on April 12.

Smith pleaded guilty to Malicious Destruction of Property and was sentenced to 10 months in jail after an incident involving his ex-wife last year.

The Democratic Senator shot at his ex-wife's car with an AR-15 after she discovered him in bed with another woman.

He had served Michigan's fourth district, which includes portions of Allen Park, Detroit, Lincoln Park and Southgate since 2010.
