State panel to review Jackson County Sheriff petition

Monday afternoon, a state panel will meet to decide if a recall petition against Jackson County Sheriff Steve Rand will move forward.

The panel will meet at 1:30pm Monday to decide if the Sheriff will face a recall vote.

This all comes after Sheriff's Lieutenant Tommy Schuette filed a lawsuit of being a "multi-faceted Bigot" who was caught on tape making derogatory comments about women, black and the LGBT community.

Schuette's father filed the petition language that the state board is set to review Monday.

If the petition is approved and Schuette later gets 13,000 signatures during a six month period, Jackson County voters will have a say next May if Sheriff Rand stays in office or not.

This is one of two ways that the Sheriff can be removed from his seat. The other is by Governor's order.

Back in February, county leaders asked Governor Rick Snyder to do just that.

The Governor referred the case to the Attorney General's Office, but no decision has been made as of October 8th.
