State panel set to hear 3rd draft of petition language to recall Sheriff

Board to review petition to oust Sheriff

A retired police officer isn't giving up on his efforts to recall embattled Jackson County Sheriff Steve Rand.

For the third time, the State Board of Canvassers is set to review recall language submitted by Dean Schuette Thursday. His first two recall petitions were denied by the state.

Rand was heard making racist and sexist comments on video recordings released as part of a lawsuit against him earlier this year.

The discriminatory comments by the Sheriff aren't the only reasons the man behind the petition is giving this time around.

Schuette says one of the three sets of recall petition language filed with the state cites an incident where the Sheriff shot his gun in his office.

The only way that Rand can be removed from his seat is by Governor's orders or a recall vote.

The State Board of Canvassers will review Schuette's petition language in an open meeting set for 2 p.m. in Lansing.
