It could influence an election, while also shed some light for politicians to see what voters think of them.

The state of the state survey from Michigan State University has released their results.

It's certainly a survey for the people, the politicians and for the politically curious the MSU's Institue For Public Policy And Social Research conducts a state-wide random phone survey's of about a 1,000 people to generate a feel for ballot proposals.

"I think it comes down to as always inquiring minds want to know," said Arnold Weinfield-Institute For Public Policy And Social Research Interim Director

These are minds that are tapped into through this survey.

"And we are taking their temperature on political candidates, on those that hold public office, whether it's the governor of the president, how they think about the economy if they think they are doing better off than they were just a few years ago," said Weinfield.

Arnold Weinfield, the interim director with the institute tells me topics range from marijuana to anti-gerrymandering and more. Results are varied but Weinfield said they are usually pretty accurate

Weinfield said, "they told us that Whitmer and Schuette were going to win the primaries, and they did. So we would like to think we were spot on about that."

Aside from their standard questions, they also take in some from clients.

"Policymakers or those in education take a look at issues. Getting a feel for what the public thinks or understands about those issues helps people shape the policy," said Weinfield.

MSU's Institute For Public Policy And Social Research has been doing these surveys for 20 years, about two to three times a year. They will be starting up another round of surveys in a couple of weeks
