The state is looking at new rules to protect children in home daycares but some providers and even parents think it could force good people out of business.
Right now state law only requires the person holding the license to undergo an FBI criminal background check.
However a bill in the legislature would expand that to all adults living in the home.
For parents, finding the right daycare can be a tough decision.
“It’s a huge thing because you leave your kids all day with these people and they help you raise them so you want the best possible care,” said Lavonne Blonde, a Lansing parent.
To help provide the best care, Lawmakers have proposed a Senate Bill 180 requiring each adult in the household of a licensed daycare to also undergo a background check.
If anyone in the home has been convicted of any one of several specific crimes, the provider could lose their license for as long as 10 years which some think is a little far.
