State lawmakers looking for ways to handle extra snow days

LANSING, Mich. — Next week's weather forecast calls for more snow.

That forecast could force schools to take more snow days.

Most districts are already over the limit and looking to the state Legislature for help.

One proposal would wipe the slate clean for school districts.

Another would grant schools a few extra waivers.

"We, unfortunately, have a good solid month of winter left. This has been a crazy winter," said Northwest School Superintendent Geoff Bontrager.

Northwest Schools is just one of the districts that are going to need more than its six allotted snow days and three state-issued waiver days.

It's unclear how many extra days they would get.

One proposal would forgive all the snow days, allowing the school year to end exactly when the district had scheduled.

The other would wipe out the snow days taken when Michigan was under a state of emergency declared by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Lawmakers are trying to decide which route to take but everyone agrees that something needs to be done.

"School districts have to plan out their year early in the year and they now have to afford for extra days to run the schools, staff the school and be there," said state Rep. Angela Witwer.

Parents just want legislators to get something done before kids are stuck in class until July.

"I think that it's very important that the Legislature looks at that as a possibility of passing the bill because it is an unprecedented year for lots of snow days, more than normal," said Kerrie Messenger.

The next step for the bills is for them to go through a House Committee process, which could take a couple of weeks.
