LANSING, Mich. — Michigan taxpayers who still have not filed their state income tax returns are encouraged to consider e-filing with the filing deadline looming in a little less than a week, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury (Treasury).
By 11:59 p.m. Monday, April 15, state income tax returns must be submitted to the state Treasury Department by e-filing or through the U.S. Postal Service. Taxpayers can go towww.mifastfile.org [links.govdelivery.com] to learn about available options for e-filing for free or for a fee.
“Michiganders who still have to prepare a state income tax return should not wait,” State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks said. “You may be missing out on important tax credits that could provide a refund. I recommend e-filing for greater filing accuracy, faster processing and quicker refunds.”
Choosing electronic filing and direct deposit is convenient, safe and secure. Last year, more than 4.2 million Michigan taxpayers e-filed, which is nearly 85 percent of state income tax filers.
Michigan taxpayers are strongly encouraged to explore their eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit and Homestead Property Tax Credit. These tax credits can reduce tax owed and may provide a refund.
In addition, some Michigan taxpayers who file a state income tax return may receive a letter from the state Treasury Department asking for more information to confirm their identity. The letters are part of an effort to protect individuals from cybercriminals, who attempt to file state tax returns and steal refunds.
Taxpayers should closely follow the instructions outlined in the letter to receive their refunds.
For the convenience of taxpayers, both federal and state returns are due on Monday, April 15. To learn more about state income taxes, go to www.michigan.gov/incometax [links.govdelivery.com].
