LANSING, Mich. — State of Michigan employees have been notified that preparations for a government shutdown can cease.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has received all 16 spending bills from the State Legislature and is expected to review them with her team over the weekend, said Kurt Weiss, a Department of Technology,
Management and Budget spokesman.
Whitmer has several options with the state’s budget.
She could approve all the spending bills or choose to exercise her veto powers.
No matter what actions Whitmer takes, Weiss said everything appears in place to avoid state departments from closing Tuesday.
Asked why he’s confident a shutdown has been averted, Weiss pointed to the bills now in Whitmer’s office.
“We can now do the work we need to do,” Weiss said.
The State Legislature isn’t expected to be in session this weekend and may not meet again until Tuesday. Monday marks the second day of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
Weiss said any supplemental spending bills for the state budget could be reviewed and possibly approved on or after Tuesday.
