The State Board of Canvassers has given two groups the go-ahead to start gathering signatures to put their proposals on the November 2018 ballot.
MI Time to Care wants a constitutional amendment requiring employers to give their employees paid sick leave. Employees would accumulate paid leave time based on their hours worked. The leave could be used for medical needs, issues related to domestic violence and sexual assault and school meetings related to a child's health, disability and domestic violence or sexual assault. Employers would specifically prohibited from retaliating against an employees who requests or uses paid leave.
Abrogate Prohibition Michigan will be asking voters to back a proposal to legalize possessing, growing, selling and delivering marijuana for recreational use. The petition language specifically bans the use of excise taxes, fines and fees to "diminish the use of Cannabis."
The petitions must get roughly 315,650 signatures to go on the November ballot. That's equal to 10% of the total number of votes cast in the 2014 Gubernatorial election. The groups have 180 days to reach that number.
The State Board of Canvassers has not yet decided on a petition that would create an independent commission to draw legislative and Congressional districts. News 10 and wilx.com will have updates when that decision is made.
