Two people in Genesee County are being charged with felony animal abuse after two dogs were dropped off at the local humane society in horrible condition.

Sheriff Robert J. Pickell says the dogs belonged to a woman suffering from heroin addiction-- and they would go weeks at a time without being fed. An investigation revealed the owner's boyfriend would occasionally throw a pizza down the basement where the dogs were being kept. A third dog was found dead in the house.

The case was turned over to the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office, who charged the owner and her boyfriend with one count each of Animal Killing/Torture-- a 4-year maximum felony.

Sheriff Pickell says he hopes this case will be a warning to others, that his county takes animal cruelty issues seriously and will take action against those who abuse their pets.

Because of the graphic nature of the dogs' condition, we are not posting the pictures. We have included a link to the Sheriff's Facebook page if you would like to see them for yourself.
