LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Debbie Stabenow was the featured speaker at Friday's Hall of Honor Ceremony for U.S. Veterans.
During the event, twelve of Michigan's most distinguished military veterans were recognized.
In 2018, Michigan became just the twelfth state with an entity to recognize veterans, active-duty and reserve personnel statewide.
This inaugural event, held at the Michigan Military Museum in Lansing, honored soldiers with a connection to Michigan for their military service, or for their combined military, community, and professional accomplishments.
Stabenow's remarks highlighted the inductees to the Michigan Military and Veterans Hall of Honor.
She also presided over the induction of six veterans into the Hall of Honor, including former "Dean of the House" and U.S. Army Second Lieutenant John D. Dingell, Jr.
"Honor is a core military virtue that, unlike fame, implies true worth, genuine virtue and real achievement -- valorous and meritorious," said retired Major General Robert W. Smith III, president of the Michigan Military and Veterans Hall of Honor. "The military veterans for whom we will honor at our inaugural ceremony exemplify these attributes through their military, personal and professional achievements."
Senator Gary Peters will also participated in the ceremony.
Earlier in the day, Stabenow addressed the Rotary Club of Lansing.
In her speech to the group, the Senator addressed her legislation seeking affordable health care and Medicare for those 50 and older.
Stabenow's bill would give people between the ages of 50 and 64 years old the option of buying into Medicare.
