St. Johns man charged with 12 felonies after firing at officers

ST. JOHNS, Mich. — The man who reportedly shot at police officers late Sunday night in St. Johns has been charged with a dozen felonies and two misdemeanors.

Brent Emerson Martinez, 37, of St. Johns, was charged with false report or threat of terrorism, a 20-year felony; discharging a firearm in or at a building, 10-year felony; four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, four-year felony per count; five counts of assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer, two-year felony per count; felony firearm, two-year felony; and two counts of malicious use of a telecommunications device, a six-month misdemeanor per count, according to a press release.

Martinez was arraigned in 65A District Court on Tuesday and is lodged at the Clinton County Sheriff's Office under a $500,000 cash/surety bond.

His probable cause hearing is at 1:30 p.m. March 27 in front of Clinton County District Judge Michael Clarizio.

His prelim exam is at 2:30 p.m. April 4.

On Sunday night, March 17, Martinez, who reportedly was suicidal and armed, was reported to the St. Johns police.

They responded to the 500 block of North Clinton Avenue in St. Johns at approximately 9:30 a.m.

They tried to contact the man and learned upon arrival that he was also threatening to go to his ex-girlfriend's place of business and shoot it up.

As officers were setting up a perimeter around his home, he began to shoot at the officers.

The officers did reach Martinez by phone, at which time he surrendered and taken into custody without incident.

No injuries were reported.
