EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan State University Alumni Association magazine highlighting allegations of sexual assault and harassment is now published.
Former interim president John Engler scrapped the summer 2018 issue and instead chose to focus on how the university was emerging from the Larry Nassar scandal.
Many in the MSU community told FOX 47 News they are glad to see this issue front and center on campus and hope it will help the university move forward.
"I think it's too bad it couldn't be brought up sooner," said Josephine Forbush, MSU student.
The original 31-page publication being called the "Teal Issue" was set to go out in Summer 2018, but was nixed by Engler.
"But for such a universally accepted issue, I believe it should never be banned in the first place," said Kyle McCann, an MSU student.
Instead, the alumni association published another issue. That issue mentions very little sexual assault allegations, or convicted child molester, Larry Nassar.
It included an interview with Engler on how MSU is going to be stronger and safer amidst the Nassar scandal.
"I was disappointed, I know a similar type issue was used with Penn State under their own similar concerns, and it was an excellence response. I really thought that MSU can do the same, " said Joy Landis, MSU faculty/staff.
In a statement online, the magazine editor said alumni from across the country asked the university to release the Teal Issue. On March 29, the magazine published the Teal Issue in excerpts in the printed Spring 2019 issue.
Staffers credit new interim president Satish Udpa for the willingness to release it.
"I think it's fabulous, it's the right direction and I'm really proud to have him as our new president interim," said Landis.
FOX 47 News has asked the MSU Alumni Association about the Teal Issue, it's choosing not to comment.
