Moms Amy Tyrell and Jen Cook say they grew up along Lake Michigan in South Haven. They know what the water can do, and say drowning is something at the top of their minds.
“I think about it every time I’m on Lake Michigan. I grew up around here. It’s unexpected. It would be unexpected for us, it would be unexpected for anyone," Amy Tyrell said.
That's why they talk with their kids about safety at the shoreline. The kids know when they're out to far to come back in when Amy or Jen starts waving their hands to come closer.
Sheriff Daniel Abbott from Van Buren County says they've seen a lot more people at the lake over the last few weeks and wants to remind everyone of the rules.
“There’s totally no alcohol allowed on the beach in South Haven,” Sheriff Abbott said.
“Alcohol is a big factor when people run into trouble on these beaches."
Especially with the Fourth of July coming up and being on a Saturday, Abbott says he wants everyone to stay safe.
