The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, announces a construction contract awarded for major repairs at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Roen Salvage Company, located in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., was awarded the contract for more than $1.9 million to replace mooring bollards and bollard foundations at the Soo Locks facility.

Construction to replace pier bollards will take place along the West Center Pier located at Soo Area Office facility. The onsite work in the contract should begin in spring and will replace mooring bollards along the west section of the Center Pier, which is the long, narrow, marine structure that separates the North Canal and the South Canal at the entrance to the navigation locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., near Lake Superior.

"This is an important investment that will help to rehabilitate and modernize the aging facilities at the Soo Locks," said Lt. Col. Greg Turner, district engineer.

The work to be conducted includes the removal and replacement of multiple bollards with new steel castings anchored to drilled shaft foundations. Walkway pavement adjacent to the bollards will also be removed and replaced.

It is anticipated that this project will have minimal effect to shipping traffic. Additionally, the construction will yield to commercial vessels during passage.

This contract work should be complete by the end the summer 2019.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, maintains a navigation system of 91 harbors and four connecting channels, including the channels joining lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, St. Clair and Erie.
