LANSING, Mich. — Construction on the long-awaited Red Cedar Development is underway. Crews broke ground on the project Thursday afternoon.
Even though it's only day one of the construction, some neighbors are already calling it a nuisance.
Eight years ago, plans were presented to redevelop the old Groesbeck Golf Course into a mixed-use project.
Lansing City Council passed a modified noise ordinance waiver for the Red Cedar Development after residents pushed back against a request for around-the-clock construction.
"I would definitely say that it's a nuisance. It's very loud and very inconvenient and just really not my favorite thing," Alayna Werth, who lives nearby, said.
Crews can work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays through Nov. 30.
"If there's a slight noise issue I'd rather see the positive outcomes that are coming from that and deal with like a little bit of bothersome nuisances from the noise," Peyton Thein, who lives nearby, said.
Residents from across the road at the Skyvue Apartments said they're not too thrilled about the commotion from construction crews.
"The noise does bother me to an extent but yeah I say the main concern is the traffic and just navigating around that especially when I'm in a rush you know getting to class or work," Mikella Vanlith, who lives nearby, said.
Other neighbors say they're excited to see new developments along Michigan Avenue.
The noise and everything doesn't really bother me. I understand that people have a job they have to get done and they have to do it some way and I'm kind of excited to see what's going to come and see the new developments that are coming into this area," Thein said.
Construction on the development is scheduled to be complete by the fall of 2020.
