Spring Arbor University in rural Jackson County is responding to an incident involving a student in blackface. A white student posted a photo online in blackface with the caption, "HMU if you need ya cotton picked".
The controversial post sparked outrage and anger and pushed the Christian University into the spotlight. Spring Arbor issued a statement on its Facebook page: Spring Arbor University is committed to fostering a diverse learning environment that values the dignity of every human being. SAU takes seriously the nurturing of our Christian community so that all students regardless of their background are respected. The university is aware of a recent racially insensitive post on social media connected to an SAU student. This posting is upsetting and is not aligned with our core values. We do not condone this behavior and we are addressing this situation with the student and the SAU community.
Spring Arbor hasn't commented on exactly what disciplinary action was taken against the student.
