Smelling smoke this morning? Its possible wildfires burning in Tennessee right now could be the reason for the smoky smell around Mid-Michigan.
Many people who stepped outside last night and early this morning could smell smoke. The wind gusts from the wildfires in the popular resort towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee are pretty strong- strong enough to possibly carry the smell of smoke all the way here.
Hundreds of people were evacuated from Pigeon Forge late Monday as the fires continued to burn. The wildfire so far has burned 30 buildings and forced the evacuation of downtown Gatlinburg.
More than 100 Firefighters are on the front line battling the blazes with more crews expected to arrive today.
Workers at Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies were forced to evacuate this morning, but all 10,000 animals are still inside. The General Manager says the building is still standing and the animals will be safe as long as the building doesn't catch fire.
The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids posted about the smoke smell in Michigan on its Facebook page this morning.
