LANSING, Mich. — U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) released the following statement today after major domestic automakers announced they would halt production at North American manufacturing plants until at least March 30. The 8th District includes General Motors Corp.’s Lansing Grand River Assembly and Orion Assembly plants, which employ more than 2,700 hourly and salaried workers.
“The decision of major domestic automakers to halt production at North American plants, including the Lansing Grand River and Orion assembly plants in our district, was no doubt a difficult one, but appropriate given the severity of the crisis,” Slotkin said. “I have heard from many UAW members concerned about the risks of continuing to operate, and I applaud the manufacturers for responding to those concerns.”
“This is another indicator of the significant disruptions COVID-19 will cause for workers and the economy. And it will be an especially serious blow for auto workers for whom the memories of 2008-2009 are fresh. I will continue to stay in close contact with company and labor leaders in the 8th District and the industry on steps we can take in Congress to reduce the economic impact these closures will have. This underscores the absolute necessity for Congress to act quickly on economic recovery legislation that focuses assistance directly on those working families who are bearing the brunt of the crisis.”
