EATON RAPIDS, Mich. — Signs outside of a business in Eaton Rapids are attracting attention, but no the kind owners want.
The Lawson's were slapped with an ordinance for having these signs outside their business. They say it's time the ordinance changed.
Jamie Lawson and his wife Traci put these signs outside their store "Your Creative Escape" to beautify the space, but a building inspector told them last Thursday that the signs have to go.
The city said their main sign is too big and they're only allowed to have two signs facing a street, not seven.
The Lawson's admit they may be violating the ordinance, but they want it changed.
"Each building should have their own signs whether it looks good or not."
The city gave them the options of getting a building permit or pay $180 and go in front of a review board, but the Lawson's want to fight the infractions instead because they say business has been up a lot since they put the signs up.
"I could pay 180 and see what happens or that's just not right to me. To me the signs aren't terrible signs. They're beautifying a building that needed it for a long, long time."
The city was reached out to multiple times Friday, but we didn't hear back.
"We're just trying to do the right thing for the town."
The owners are thinking of taking their business elsewhere.
"We don't want to leave. This town has adopted us and we've done really well here, but we can't play games with the city like this."
The city says the Lawson's have two weeks to take the signs down, but the family says they're going to the city council meeting on Monday to fight the violation.
