Shot fired, victims assaulted with baseball bat

Two victims were assaulted by a suspect with a baseball bat, and the suspect also fired a gun inside a home, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office reports.

At approximately 3:18 p.m. Thursday, deputies responded to a call of a large fight and shots being fired in the 200 block of East Leroy Street in the Village of Burlington. Upon arrival, they found a 35-year-old Burlington man who was assault, along with the assailants 23-year-old sister, who was also assaulted by the baseball bat, according to the report.

The assailant, a 21-year-old man, also fired a firearm within the residence, but nobody was injured, says the release.

Before deputies arrived, the suspect fled. A search in the surrounding area came up negative in locating the suspect, and the Calhoun County K9 Unit was called in.

The K9 Unit was able to locate and take the suspect into custody and was lodged in the Calhoun County Jail.

The suspect’s name is not being released pending arraignment, but charges are being sought for two counts of felonious assault, possession of a firearm while intoxicated. The suspect also had a probation violation warrant out of Branch County.

Assisting on scene was the Michigan State Police and LifeCare Ambulance personnel.
