The Ingham County Sheriff's Office is setting aside a day to make sure a deputy who was killed on the job is honored every year. Grant Whitaker died when he crashed into a tree during a high-speed chase on December 7, 2014.

Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth announced April 27th will now be Grant Whitaker Day within the department. That's the anniversary of the day he joined the force. There will be a ceremony at 11:45 and a special flag will fly over the sheriff's office.

That's just one of the ways the department has honored Whitaker over the years. A training room at headquarters in Mason was named after him six months after he died.
Last December police from around Mid-Michigan held a unity bike ride in Stockbridge Township on the anniversary of his death. They followed the route of the chase that led to the crash.

The man he was chasing is serving between 20 and 45 years in prison. A jury convicted John Kelsey in 2015. Kelsey still claims he was not driving the vehicle.
