UPDATE: Body retrieved from under manhole cover

The Lansing fire department has removed the remains of a body from the sewer system at Herbert and Wilson streets. Police say due to the state of decomposition no determination of the gender or identity of the body has been made. An autopsy will be performed.

Lansing public service employees discover what they believe is a body in the city's sewer system Tuesday morning.

Lansing Police public information officer Rboert Merritt tells FOX 47 that the public service workers were doing routine checks of the sewer system at Herbert Street and Wilson Street ,which is near Cedar Street and Baker Street , when they found what they think is a body that was quite decomposed. This happened around 10 a.m.

The Lansing Fire Department is working to extract what is believed to be a body. There is no information yet on a gender or identity.

FOX 47 has a crew at the site and will have an update when more information becomes available.
