Tipping culture under fire? A proposed ballot measure here in Michigan would eliminate tip credit. Many servers and bartenders will be rallying Tuesday afternoon to speak out against the measure.
Tip credit protects the server. If the employee doesn't make enough in tips during a given workweek to earn minimum wage, the employer has to pay the difference.
The proposal aims to eliminate this credit and give workers an actual fair minimum wage, but servers speaking out against this proposal say they actually earn a higher than average minimum wage right now with tips, and businesses would struggle to survive if a minimum wage was implemented.
"Closures. Price increases to offset the cost of labor and down the line one of the biggest negative effects it would be an attack on the tipping culture itself," said Daniel Tucker, Manager of the Lansing Brewing Company.
Restaurant Opportunities Centers United is backing this proposal.
Dozens of servers and bartenders will rally with the National Restaurant Association at Lansing Brewing Company on East Shiawassee Street.
