Michigan Senator Mike Shirkey of Clarklake has been honored with the "Friend of Family Medicine" award for his work on the Healthy Michigan Plan.
Two physician groups payed tribute to Senator Shirkey at an event on Tuesday. The Senator calls it an honor to help family physicians, because they're on the front line of defense, and the best source of education for keeping us healthy. He said, "One thing we need to do is to continue to advocate for and recruit people to go into family practice. There's not enough family practitioners across the state."
The Healthy Michigan Plan is an expansion of Medicaid in the state. As of last Monday, there were over 600,000 beneficiaries of the plan.
