DETROIT (AP) - U.S. Senate candidate Sandy Pensler of Michigan is committing $500,000 toward tech billionaire Elon Musk's pledge to bring clean water to Flint homes with water-quality issues.
Pensler, a wealthy businessman running against John James in the Republican primary, said in a statement Thursday that installing high-end filtration systems at houses "can fix any remaining problems within a few days."
Musk tweeted Wednesday that he would "fund fixing the water in any house" with contamination above federal levels.
Lead leached from pipes after Flint switched its water source in 2014 without adding corrosion-control chemicals. Thousands of underground water lines are being replaced and testing has shown overall levels are again below the federal limit for lead.
The state continues to provide free water filters, replacement cartridges and water-testing kits to residents.
