LANSING, Mich. — You may see shorter lines the next time you go to renew your drivers license at the Secretary of State, that is after some new upgrades take place.
The offices will be closed across the state over President;s Day Weekend for the system-wide conversion.
During that three day weekend, Feb.16 - Feb. 18, they'll be upgrading old computer systems used for vehicle records.
The offices, kiosks, and online services will be switching over to a more modern system and will be unavailable from 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, until 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19.
“This is a vital project for our department and its millions of customers and the first step in implementing our 30-minute guarantee,” Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said. “When fully implemented, the new system will transform our technology, making our work more efficient and our service to customers better than before.”
The enhancements will include new online options, improving existing online and kiosk services, and giving staff a more efficient tool to look up vehicle information and process transactions in a timely manner.
After the transition, you should expect some delays as staff gets used to the new system.
During that time, it might be best to use the online service at ExpressSOS.com or to complete transactions outside this time frame.
Also, because of this project, any late fees will be waived for transactions with expiration dates between Feb. 11 and March 2.
“We sincerely appreciate customers’ patience and understanding as our department modernizes its computer system,” Benson said.
