Voters picked two Republicans to fill the seats of disgraced former Michigan lawmakers Cindy Gamrat and Todd Courser.
A sex scandal at the State Capitol led to Gamrat's expulsion and Courser's resignation last year. While the two now fight to stay out of prison, voters in their districts chose two Republicans to take their seats.
Lapeer County Road Commission Chairman Gary Howell won Courser's seat in Lapeer County's 82nd District. Republican Mary Whiteford was elected to Gamrat's former seat in the 80th District. She is a businesswoman and registered nurse.
Courser and Gamrat were ousted from office after attempting to cover up their affair. They are also accused of misusing taxpayer dollars and face charges.
Gamrat faces two charges of misconduct in office. She could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison if convicted.
Courser could get up to 30 years if convicted on charges of misconduct in office and lying to investigators under oath. Both are now out on bond while they prepare for trial.
