Seasonal job market looking good according to students, survey

Posted

Amor Henry is a sophomore at Holt High School. She just got her first summer job at Ihop.

"I'm going to be 18 soon and scholarships aren't guaranteed,” Henry said. “I've been trying to gather money for college and stuff."

Other kids are out looking... Partly for the independence...

"I'm really searching because i just want to make my own money to buy my own stuff," one student said.

And partly because of their parents.

"Yeah, they've been getting on me about getting a job and just paying for my own things,” Josiah Shamsiddeen, a 9th grader said. “Taking responsibilities."

These kids might be in luck, because according to a new career builder survey, 41 percent of the businesses surveyed are planning to hire seasonal workers. Last year, only 29 percent were looking.

Companies like McDonalds are making major pushes to get new hires as well. The golden arches are providing nearly 9 thousand summer jobs across Michigan alone. They're even taking job applications through snapchat to target younger workers.

The high schoolers with jobs agree the market is good. And they didn't face any trouble getting their feet in the door... Or have to fill out a million applications.

"I only sent one and i got the job immediately," Henry said.

The kids are hoping they can land these jobs so they can…

"Pay my phone bill and so I could get some ice," a student said.

And

"Get your money."

The high schoolers with jobs all had opinions on what the best summer jobs to look for were. Some said apply to places that pay more, like Whole Foods. They also said labor jobs or working outdoors are jobs they like.
