LANSING, Mich. — Michigan has 1,100 parole absconders on the loose and the Jackson man shot by police Saturday night is one of them.
The Michigan Department of Corrections has a parole absconder unit made of about 30 members of law enforcement and was created back in 2009.
During that time, there were about 25-hundred parole absconders in the state.
Now, the Department of Corrections says that number is just over 11-hundred.
One of them is a Jackson man who was shot by police Saturday night.
The 29-year-old was shot after officers were called to Mansion Street in Jackson on Saturday night for a welfare check.
When they arrived they saw him with a knife holding a woman in a headlock.
The man is currently being watched by State Department of Corrections officers at Henry Ford Allegiance Health Hospital.
His mother was able to get away with a stab wound to her back and is also being treating at the same hospital.
Police have not given an update on their conditions.
The officer who shot the man is on paid administrative leave.
