LANSING, Mich. (WSYM) — Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette is calling on federal prosecutors to appeal a decision declaring a law against genital mutilation unconstitutional.
FOX 47 told you about a federal judge tossing the case of a Michigan doctor charged with FGM last month because of that decision.
In his final interview before leaving office, Schuette said he hopes the federal government will appeal the decision.
The judge's ruling also dismissed charges against three mothers who took their daughters to a Detroit area clinic as part of a religious procedure.
Meanwhile, Schuette also told reporters he has not met with the woman who is replacing him.
Schuette says he has exchanged phone calls with Democratic Attorney General-Elect Dana Nessel, but the two have not been able to meet in person.
He also says he doesn't know what he plans to do next following his loss in the governor's race last month, but is suggesting that he has no plans to retire.
