A former assistant prosecutor in Wayne County has been elected to serve the remainder of a two-year term in the Michigan House.

Democrat Tenisha Yancey of Grosse Pointe easily won Tuesday's special election over Republican Mark Corcoran. The heavily Democratic 1st District includes Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe Woods, Grosse Pointe Shores and a portion of Detroit.

Yancey, a member of the Harper Woods school board, has also worked at the Wayne County executive's office.

Earlier this year, Democratic former Rep. Brian Banks resigned a month into his third term as part of a plea deal in a loan fraud case.
