Scammers using payment apps

and last updated

More than 60 percent of adults use an app like Venmo or Cash App to split the bill at a restaurant with other people to pay someone back.

These apps allow people to send money using an email or a phone number.

While the apps are secure, they aren't immune to scammers.

Using the app with strangers can be risky.

"When you start to use this app and payment method with people you don't know, you're opening up a whole other avenue that this wasn't designed for", said Tom Bartholomy of the Better Business Bureau.

Buying tickets with the apps can also be risky because sometimes those tickets end up being fake.

The payment apps do not offer fraud or purchase protection so it's important to treat your transactions like you're handing over cash.
